How AI assistants choose which sources to cite, and what you can change.
Guide
How each assistant shows its sources and what gets a page linked.
An AI citation is a link that an assistant attaches to its answer to show where a statement came from. For a business it works like a search result inside the answer: a reader who wants proof or detail clicks through to the cited page. A citation and a mention are different things. An assistant can name your brand without linking to you, or link your guide while recommending a competitor.
Each product shows sources its own way, and some only when they searched the web for that answer.
| Assistant | When sources appear | What the vendor says |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | with the AI answer on the results page | Google’s documentation on AI features says they show a broad set of supporting links, and that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be one of them |
| Perplexity | on every answer | Perplexity’s help center says each answer carries numbered citations that link to the original sources |
| ChatGPT | when the reply used web search | OpenAI’s developer documentation says the model decides whether to search based on the prompt, and that apps showing web results must make inline citations visible and clickable |
So in ChatGPT a reply without links may come from the model’s memory, while in Perplexity sources are part of every answer. When you test, note which mode produced the reply.
OpenAI’s web search documentation keeps two lists apart. One holds the citations placed in the text. The other, called sources, holds every URL the model looked at while writing the reply. That second list is longer. Google’s Gemini API documentation works in a similar way: each citation is tied to a specific span of the answer text.
The practical lesson: being found is step one. To get the link, your page needs a sentence the model wants to lean on for a particular claim. That is usually a short definition, a number with its context, a price range, a step in a process, or a clear comparison.
Buyers ask assistants things like “how much does X cost in my city”, “what is the difference between A and B” or “how long does it take”. The citation goes to a page that answers in plain words, close to the top, without making the reader scroll past a hero banner and three slogans.
We tested this on our own site, aoe.kz, with Russian-language queries in Almaty. On September 22, 2026, Google AI Overviews linked to it in 0 of 17 tracked queries. On October 6 it was 2 of 20, after three queries were added to the set. The pages that got links had been rewritten so that the first paragraph answers the question, with a table and a block of questions below. For “local SEO” the link showed up a week after the page was rewritten and was gone a week after that. Citations come and go, so a single good screenshot proves little.
In the same period the number of times ChatGPT named us did not grow. A Google citation and a chat mention are separate results, and we track them separately.
Each product shows sources its own way, and some only when they searched the web for that answer.
| What you find | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Named, not linked | the assistant knows you from other sources | give the topic a page with a direct answer |
| Linked, not named | your page explains the topic, but a rival is recommended | add your own offer and facts next to the explanation |
| Neither, rival linked | the rival answers the question more plainly | compare the first paragraphs side by side |
| Wrong URL linked | an old or weaker page covers the topic | update it or send it to the current page |

The layout side is covered in more depth in our AEO checklist.
Write down 10 to 30 questions that real buyers ask, in their wording.
A mention is your brand name in the answer text. A citation is a link to one of your pages as a source. You can have either one without the other, which is why we track both.
We know of no way to buy a citation in an organic AI answer. Google’s documentation lists no extra requirement for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
On our site, two pages were linked 1 and 7 days after their rewrite (we check weekly, so the true delay may be shorter). That is two queries in one market, so take it as an example, not a promise.
Our GEO guide covers how assistants choose sources, the grounding guide explains why answers with search show links, and the AI search glossary has short definitions.
